The government has announced an increase in the car mileage rate to 55p/mile backdated to April 2026. The rate had been 45p/mile since 2011. The PAGB has therefore increased its maximum mileage rate to 55p/mile. For Clubs, the increase is just over 20%. For comparison, the CPI and RPI increases since 2011 are about 50% and 75% respectively. See more details on the Speakers page.
55p/mile is not the cost of running any car: it is a contribution given that such mileage is only partial use of a private car. HMRC accepts this rate for expenses as a compromise regardless of the actual car or the balance of use. PAGB adopts this as a maximum rate to protect listed speakers and to provide some certainty to Clubs when planning their programmes.
